Balancing Tolerability and Effectiveness – It’s important to choose the right AED for you. For example, if you have plans to become pregnant, it is advised to avoid valproic acid, as it can cause birth defects. Alternatively, people with liver or kidney disease should try to avoid AEDs that are metabolised by the liver or excreted by the kidneys. Even some AEDs have been shown to increase risk of suicide, however some have been shown to stabilise or improve mood.

Special Concerns for Children – Problems faced by children with Epilepsy include side effects, number of medications, seizure severity / frequency and parental anxiety. Epilepsy does not occur in isolation – it affects the entire family.
